Oct 10, 2011 · Over the winter 2 years ago, we started having flame sensor issues and the technician had to come about every 2 months to clean the flame sensor. No cause was ever found. Last year, we had a brand new high efficiency furnace installed by Climate Care. Outside air only. Within two months of operation, the flame sensor needed cleaning. Today I want to give you a basic Sequence Of Operation for a standard gas furnace aka 80% Efficiency furnaces. This will not apply to every single one out there but typically will cover about 90% of what you will find. The flame sensor has a coating on it to make it last a long time and will get worn off by over cleaning, so it is best to only clean rod when it is needed. If flame sensor requires cleaning more often then once a year it should be replaced, or check for other problems like vent stack temperature, gas pressure, or primary air need to be adjusted.
